The Alabama Iota chapter is the oldest fraternity on the Birmingham-Southern College (BSC) campus. The chapter recently moved from the campus's old fraternity row (built in 1954) to its present location at #1 Fraternity Row. The new $1.315 million chapter house opened in the Fall of 2002. The college had an aggressive fundraising campaign and challenged the Greeks with raising a minimum of $700,000 (over half of the estimated construction cost) before construction could begin. SAE was the first fraternity to achieve this goal by raising over $853,000 as its part of the fundraising drive by the end of 2001. The new house provides nearly 7,100 square feet and houses 22 men at maximum capacity. The house is tastefully decorated and very lavishly furnished. Noteworthy features of the house include: a state of the art sound system installed throughout the house and patio that provides music for various chapter functions; a formal Living Room with flat screen HDTV plasma television on the first floor; pool table and ping-pong table for recreation and double beds in a loft setting are a real luxury in the individual rooms. Another benefit is adequate parking located directly adjacent to the house.

In addition, the chapter is fortunate enough to have several SAE alumni on staff at the college. Dr. Neal R. Berte, Immediate Past President of BSC, was at the helm from February 1, 1976 until his retirement in 2004 (a milestone for any campus President). Keith D. Thompson is Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Dr. Stewart Jackson is Dean of the Chapel. With such campus resources and over 1,500 living SAE alumni (many of them from Alabama Iota) in the immediate Birmingham metro area, the chapter has a wealth of alumni support and resources available.
